Open-source and closed-source projects both pose unique problems and solutions when it comes to innovation and both innovate in very different ways. To understand why they innovate so differently you need look at their methods and motivation.

Open-source projects have several qualities that foster innovation:

1. Anyone can contribute
Contributions to software can come in many different forms. Users of the software can contribute ideas for improvement or make the improvements themselves if they have the know-how. In theory, anyone can contribute and since ‘everyone’ is a larger pool to draw from then ‘select members of a company’ you have a much bigger potential for innovation than with closed-source.
2. Fewer boundaries between ‘need’ and ‘innovation’
When changes need to be made, there are fewer obstacles in the way. Closed-source innovation usually goes through a lengthy vetting process with several levels of approval that need to consider ROI in a monetary and market share sense. Adjustments to code in open-source projects can be done by anyone at any time for any reason.
3. Open-source changes the face of deadlines
When there isn’t a rush to get code out by a certain date you have a potential to create much stronger and cleaner applications. Open-source contributors often don’t work for monetary profit and work on open-source projects for a love of the idea or concept.
4. Open-source is creativity
When information is made available to all then the doors are open to a world of people with diverse knowledge, backgrounds and experiences who can contribute to a project. This gives an open-source project a unique edge that helps produce interesting and innovative ideas.
5. Open-source adapts
Industries and cultures all have specific needs. Open-source easily allows for the customization of software and ideas to suit different cultural needs. This is a challenge closed-source developers encounter regularly. Sometimes countries do things differently and sometimes times change. Being open-source helps projects remain relevant and cutting-edge over time.
How does this relate to business?
It all boils down to competition. If you can get a product for free that’s just as good as a product that costs money then your choice is clear. Businesses realize the benefit of open-sourcing and it drives them to innovate to maintain their edge.
We’ve reached a point where businesses need to look to the open-source community for ideas and inspiration. This process has even been made direct by sites like redesignme.com. These are sites where companies can appeal to the open-source community for ideas and innovation in exchange for money.
What does it mean for the end-user?
Luckily for the end-user, this means better products and more choice!
